HOW TO PACK FRAGILE ITEMS READY FOR STORAGE

It can be a concern to send fragile items overseas or to be packed in transport vehicles and later in warehouses. To ensure your parcels are secure and to ease apprehension when sending and having your packages stored, you should establish the best methods of packing within your company.

In storage, boxes containing valuable items are stacked on top of each other and can be wedged in, so it is imperative that you have taken care to package these delicate parcels properly.

What are considered fragile items in storage?

Materials such as glass, porcelain, antiques and musical instruments, are all considered fragile. It is vital to identify that your item is fragile by placing FRAGILE tape across the outside of the package so transporters understand to handle it with care.

Ways to pack

Choose the right box size:

Opt for a smaller box when packaging smaller items or a small item so there are limited gaps for things to move around in the transport stage.

Use dividers:

Separate multiple delicate items within boxes using dividers to avoid collision and breakage. These can be made of cardboard or felt fabrics to cushion your items and keep them in place through the journey and when being put into storage.

Avoid overpacking:

Within a box, try to fill it up and use space effectively, but also be prepared to move on to another box if it gets too heavy or full. It is important to use more boxes if you need them otherwise lifting can be dangerous and items inside can be at risk of damage.

Pad out the lining of the box:

Create a cushioned layer of bubble wrap along the sides and bottom of the box to absorb impact and movement during transport. Be prepared to stock up on bubble wrap as it is one of the most effective materials to keep your items comfortable and will reduce the risk of breakage.

Bubble wrap your goods:

As well as lining your boxes, surround each item with a layer of bubble wrap for extra protection. This may seem excessive but when dealing with fragile items, the possibility of damage is high and bubble wrap will keep your items in the best condition.

Pack from heaviest to lightest:

Using common sense when packing is crucial. Start by layering the heaviest items at the base of the box and stack up from there- always place the lighter, delicate items on top.

Pack according to the shape and size of the items:

Windows and sheets of glass will be large so will need a large box and small, fragile pieces such as drinking glasses can be arranged in medium or smaller sized boxes with dividers. Different objects will take up varying amounts of space and will need more or less cushioning, so try to pack custom to what the items require.

Extra space should be filled:

When you have packaged all your items within the box, fill up any additional space around the sides or on top with other packaging materials such as packing peanuts, paper and bubble wrap.

Before closing the box and sealing it up with FRAGILE tape, it is useful to check how secure all your items will be within the box before being transported. This can be done simply by giving the box a shake to see if the items move around too much and should be re-arranged.
